When Covid killed my thriving catering business I spent a year walking around my neighbourhood in a daze. For a decade I had been serving the healthiest plant-based food to a growing clientele of office staff downtown Toronto. My business was my passion and my purpose. I loved nourishing people and being an integral part of some of Canada's fastest growing companies - and overnight it was over.
With no income, my Toronto mortgage became unsustainable so I started to explore options. That's when I discovered that Quebec City is one of the most affordable cities in Canada. I made a couple of reconnaissance visits and fell in love with the beautiful old town - its walkable streets, the charm of its people, the festive vibes and the incredible architecture. The language was a welcomed challenge.
I sold my small concrete condo in Trinity Bellwoods and purchased a smaller light-filled apartment in the UNESCO historic district of Old Quebec. It was magic. With the cost of housing in Quebec 60-70% lower than Toronto, even with less space, I had more breathing room. While housing in Canada goes bonkers I ask myself every day -
Why isn't everyone doing a version of this?
I've always been passionate about walkable, bikeable, liveable neighbourhoods and this journey has led me to wanting to serve people in new ways. I obtained my real estate license to help others looking to explore the upside of downsizing in Toronto and beyond. Whether it's to move into a leafy garden suite or a LEED-certified laneway house, build a cute-as-a-button THOW in the burbs or acquire a cozy apartment in the heart of the city, in this climate I believe smart investments leave small footprints.
It's flipping time to talk tiny!
